How do I approach projects?

Digital media provides endless avenues for learning.

Depending on the project and medium, I use a variety of tools in my digital work. I typically work with Adobe Illustrator for graphic design, Adobe After Effects for compositions involving motion design or other film and animation elements, and Autodesk Maya for 3D modeling and animation. I also work with Procreate for digital illustrations and paintings. My workflow is dynamic and based primarily on what is necessary to deliver a project, but I enjoy creating all kinds of media and I'm always learning new software, skills, and scientific information as I take on projects.

This motion graphics project was created entirely with Adobe After Effects and Illustrator, with the intended purpose of creatively exploring ways to communicate information on a health science topic.

The projects on this page all have different purposes, but they each require a different approach to most effectively convey their scientific content. In the case of the Carotid endarterectomy diagram, I chose to digitally paint the illustrations with Procreate, then arrange the layout with Adobe Illustrator and InDesign. However, for simpler projects like the Exercise diagram, I worked entirely in Adobe Illustrator. The vertebral column is a 3D render created with Autodesk Maya & Mudbox for modeling & texturing and Arnold Render to finalize the rendering.

I am adaptable to learning new workflows and I'm always open to learning new skills and software to solve creative challenges. My design philosophy is to always experiment extensively and apply the most unique, memorable, and visually effective approach to aid the target audience in understanding the material. Getting someone's eyes to light up with excitement when they internalize a scientific concept is the ultimate goal of all my projects!
